Socrates Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Socrates - Research Paper Example To put it in simple words, Protagoras views the principle of morality as a valuable aspect that facilitates social cooperation. On the other hand, Socrates holds a vision about the principle of morality as a matter of an individuals’ interrelation towards his/her own soul which cannot be taught based on certain defined theories or assumptions contradicting Protagoras’ views that a person learns virtue from his early age recently when he/she starts speaking (Plato 5-25). Thesis Statement This study intends to analyze the arguments made by Socrates questioning the dialogues in Protagoras regarding the teachability of virtue and education humans regarding wisdom. Protagoras’ acclamations with reference to the viewpoints of Socrates will also be analyzed in this study to recognize the role of a rational agent, its justness and also its goodness in teaching wisdom to individuals. Proper justification will also be rendered with concern to the agreeability of the thesis , i.e. Protagoras. Explanation of the Argument The sole concern of Protagoras’ acclamations has been to rationalize that virtue and wisdom of human life can be taught. However, this argument has further been countered by Socrates where he questions the reality concerning the teachability aspects of virtues. ... Conversely, Socrates holds a perception that the diverse aspects of virtue are singular as well as indivisible in nature. As per his beliefs concerning the aspects of courage and wisdom are simply dissimilar names for two similar qualities of good life. Apart from arguing regarding diverse aspects of virtue, the determination of the interrelation between knowledge, doing good and pleasure have also been focused in the rudiments of Socrates’ arguments based on Protagoras’ dialogues. In this connection, Socrates proclaimed that pleasure undividable with the concern of good. This can be further rationalized with reference to Socrates’ acclamation that anything which seems to be painful is regarded as evil. This particular proclamation of Socrates signified that it is not possible knowingly to do what is good which apparently contradicts the views of Protagoras stating that individuals can be taught of doing good. Moreover, the proclamation put forward by Socrates al so represented with reference to the fact that it is quite unfeasible to live delightfully while performing any sort of evil activity which again rationalizes a strong connection within the various aspects of virtue as described by Protagoras. Conversely, Protagoras argued that there are several people who are not able to measure the most prominent doing that would bring pleasure to them. Hence, as a consequence, wrong activities are generally caused by ignorance that is not to be considered as a conflict or disagreement between ethical duties and the aspirations for pleasure within an individual. According to Protagoras’ dialogues, there lay the requirement of a specific art or

Art History - Essay Example It considered this unbalanced or asymmetrical aspect is a style effect, and called it as â€Å"contraste†. Another subtle similarity could be their love of exaggeration and decoration. Mannerism was inclined to portray anything, especially human form, in an exaggeratedly than realistically; they used artificial colors and unrealistic proportions. In most cased, the figures were exaggerated, placed in unimaginable poses. It was â€Å"unsettling and strange†. Rococo loved decoration, though it did not focus on human forms. For example, Rococo paintings had an element of â€Å"naughtiness or impurity in the behavior of their subjects†, which can be associated with unrealistic nature of the objects of Mannerism. The first difference between Mannerism and Rococo is that Mannerism is not â€Å"natural, graceful† like the high Renaissance art; it uses â€Å"clashing colors, disquieting figures with abnormally elongated limbs, (often torturous-looking) emotion and bizarre themes†, however, Rococo uses â€Å"undulating lines and S-curves prominent in Rococo are the basis for grace and beauty in art or nature; (â€Å"Rococo†, 2009; â€Å"Art History: Mannerism: (1520 - 1600)†, 2009). So Rococo is more akin to Renaissance in portraying the gracefulness in nature than Mannerism. Yet another difference is that Mannerism â€Å"combines Classicism, Christianity and mythology†, but Rococo’s use of curved lines was â€Å"unlike the straight line or the circle in Classicism† (â€Å"Rococo†, 2009; â€Å"Art History: Mannerism: (1520 - 1600)†, 2009). Mannerism was often considered â€Å"technically masterful† whereas the critics of Rococo had pointed out its frivolous nature due to its focus on decorative arts and interior design and the importance it gave to the style component, despite its taste for the complex and intricate forms of Baroque art. Rococo had light hearted themes depicted in a fashionable

Race and Ethnicity Essay Example for Free

Race and Ethnicity Essay What it means to be white can have so many definitions and/or variations. What it means to be white is to be above the rest [blacks]. Whites are taught to think they are better than blacks; more privileged than one another. But what they failed to realize is how privileged they actually are. Author Peggy McIntosh takes viewers on an in depth voyage on what it means to be white, what whiteness is, and how privileged they are. White privilege refers to the set of social privileges that white people are argued to benefit afar from commonly experienced people of color in the same social, political, or economic setting. Whiteness represents both noticeable as well as less noticeable unspoken advantages that white individuals may not recognize they have. The notion of white privilege just as male privilege implies that whites assumingly has the right to be considered as normal no matter how culturally bias this problem may seem. McIntosh explains that as a white person, she realizes she had been taught about racism as something that puts others at a disadvantage. Students need to explore what it means to be white because they have become wrapped in what it is like to be black, meaning blacks being stereotyped as poor and disadvantaged. As McIntosh puts it being white is considered to be more privileged. In my opinion, to be white is to be as ordinary as any other person. Not looking at the fact that racism is still on the rise everywhere I go, to be white simply means to be more privileged than the lower working class. Nevertheless, whiteness and white privilege affects both whites as well as blacks. In my own experiences whiteness has affected me in my school as well as personal life. White privilege reminds me of time when there was segregation present. Cases of whiteness has taken away from many opportunities for blacks. Although it may seem biased it’s true. McIntosh explains that as she grew older she was trained to be white. Her whiteness taught her what it was like to be racist and to feel like she was free from all the hostility and distress that blacks experienced. Many, perhaps most, of our white students in the United States think that racism doesn’t affect them because they are not people of color; they do not see whiteness as a racial identity. Whiteness and white privilege is also on the rise in the United States. It seems as though it has become the new American Dream. Whether a person is taught to be white or it is learn throughout one’s life span there is no end to it. Peggy McIntosh also gives many examples on how whites can level the issue of whites being over-privileged. White individuals need to seek to change their attitudes says, McIntosh. Consequently, the American Dream is different for everyone no matter what our race, ethnicity, age, or social competency may be. Just as men feel they have to always take an extra step to be noticed, women, black or white must do the same too. Peggy McIntosh released a lot of information that should be vital to students everywhere. Knowing how they can be affected by white privilege can be very important to students everywhere, not to mention English language learners as well. The effects of white privilege may have a greater effect in them seeing as they are just learning the English language and they may grasp the wrong customs.

Child Labor In India

Child Labor In India Child labor is something where children of younger age start to earn in order to support their family. In other words, child labor is any kind of work children are made to do that harms or exploits them physically, mentally or morally. According to the World Labor Report, the child labor is considered as forced labor because children are rarely in a position to give free consent to any activities performed by them as most aspect of their lives are determined by adults. Child labor is a curse to our society and a crime against humanity. Children work when they are supposed to play or go to school. By making them work in this tender age we are not only destroying their future, but also playing with the destiny of the country. The child is the father of man. This famous line quoted by William Wordsworth specifies the importance of the child for the development of building a healthy nation and society. Childhood is the most innocent stage in human life. A child normally has to enjoy its childhood days with its parents, teachers, friends etc. It is that stage of life where fine and long lasting impressions gather in childs mind. However, this simple rule of nature has been crippled by the ever-growing menace of child labor. In this modern world, child labor still remains a serious problem in many parts of the world. Today, throughout the world, around 215 million children are child labors. The sad thing is that they work under hazardous circumstances. More than half of them are exposed to the worst form of child labor such as work in harmful environments, slavery, or other forms of forced labor, illicit activities including drug trafficking and prostitution, as well as involvement in armed conflict. Child labor is a major problem in India. It is a great challenge that the country is facing. India accounts for the second highest number of child labors after Africa. In a country like India where over 40 percent of the population is living in conditions of extreme poverty, child labor is a complex issue. However, acute poverty is the main cause for child labor throughout the world, but everybody society. Parents, government, individual, low wages, unemployment, poor standard of living, deep social prejudices and backwardness are directly responsible for child labor in India. In Indian, despite, there is no enactment which genuinely contributed for eradication of child labor. The constitution in article 25 states that no child below 14 years will be employed in any factories or mines or engaged in any hazardous occupation that is harmful for them. But, till now it is not remarked anywhere of ablution or elimination of child labor. Admitting that the Child Labor Prohibition and Regulation Act of 1986 have put forward some average working conditions for children who work in hazardous environment, yet the word hazardous has not been specified clearly anywhere in the constitution, or in any act asserted on child labor. Thus, the clarification of the term hazardous is unclear and inadequate especially in the case of child labor. Child labor can be factory work, mining, or quarrying, agriculture, helping in parents business, having ones own small business, or doing odd jobs. Children work as waiters in restaurants and sometimes as tourists guides. Other children are forced to do draggy and uninteresting jobs such as polishing shoes of rich people or accumulating boxes. However, instead of working in factories and sweatshops, most child labor occurs in the informal sector, children are forced to sell products on the streets, work in agriculture fields or hidden away in houses- far from the reach of official labor inspectors and from media inspection. There are many types of child labor but bonded child labor or slave labor is one of the worst types of labor for children. It is estimated that approximately 10 million bonded children laborers are working as domestic servants in India. Apart from this there are nearly 55 million bonded child laborers who are employed across several other industries. A recent International Labor Organization (ILO) report says that in India there are about 80 percent of child laborers who are hired in the agriculture sector. Generally, the children are sold to the rich moneylenders to whom borrowed money cannot be returned. In addition to this Street children is another type of child labor where children work on the street as beggars, flower sellers, etc. Sometimes children are not being provided with food for long so that people feel sorry for them and give alms. The statistical information regarding child labor cannot be taken to be precise, as there are areas where no accounting has been done. Child labor is in fact, a source of income for poor families. Poor parents give birth to children thinking they would earn more money. The children either increase their parents income or are the only wage earners in the family. Because of poverty families are forced to send their children into labor, the employers find it a source of cheap and trouble free labor. Children can be beaten and tormented into doing dirty jobs. Innocent children are employed by industries and individuals who put them to work under exhausting environments. They are made to work for long hours in dangerous factory units and sometimes made to carry load even heavier than their own body weight. Millions of children are involved in work that is unacceptable for children, including the sale and trafficking of children into debt bondage, serfdom, and forced labor. It includes the forced employment of children for armed conflict, commercial sexual exploitation and illicit activities such as producing and trafficking drugs. This is the story of child labor in all the poor developing and underdeveloped countries of world including India. Even after sixty-five years of independence India has not been able to give any liberation to the poor. Yet withdrawal of child labor is cureless task in the current socio-economic scenario, the Indian government is dedicated to the task of confirming that all the children should be literate and that no child remains illiterate, hungry and without medical care. When this ideal will be achieved is a million dollar question. Child labor is, no doubt an evil that should be done away with at the earliest. The prevalence of child labor rebound and effects adversely on society that it is not able to stop this evil. But in a society where many households have to go through the discomfort of starvation if the children are withdrawn from work, beggars cant be chooser. Unfortunately these families have to send their children to work, knowing that the future of the child will be ruined but they have to, as that is the only way open for them to survive in this world. Therefore unless the socio economic status of the poor families is improved, India has to live with child labor.

Physics Prac - Mesuring Wavelengths Of Light :: essays research papers

Aim: To determine the approximate value of l for red light using a diffraction kit. Theory: Diffraction of light is one explanation of the wave theory of light. Francesco Grimaldi first observed this type of behvaiour from light. However, Thomas Young was the scientist that was able to derive a mathematical formula where l can be calculated. The original experiment involved sending white light into a screen with two small holes to serve as point sources. The light from these sources was then projected onto a screen and light and dark bands were observed. The mathematical formula could then be used after taking certain measurements. Equipment: Light source (Ray box), Red cellophane, Double-slit slide, and Measuring rod (can be already attached to Ray box. Method: 1.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Set up the ray box and place red cellophane in clip so that it is over the bulb. 2.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Switch on ray box and stand approximately two meters away from the ray box, hold the slide up to your eye and look through one of the double slit patterns into the light. Observe disturbance pattern. 3.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  While looking through the slide, have someone move the white marker along the slide rule until its edge is approximately halfway inside a dark or light band. 4.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Take measurement down and then repeat step 3 and gain measurement for other dark or light bands. Results: The results gained from the experiment were conclusive and accurate when compared to the original value for l for red light. Below is a table of the measurements recorded and calculations to gain l. Calculation (con't): The value d was calculated by placing the slide in a projector and then on the whiteboard (acting as a screen), marks were made. The slide had a measurement of 1cm and from this the ratio 35:1 was established. Measurements were then made and the slides actual measurements were determined. For this particular experiment, the slide marking D was used. L was measured also using simple trigonometry. The person viewing through the slide sat at a table and then looked down at the ray box on an angle.

The Court as a Framework for Civilized Society in The Tempest Essay

The Court as a Framework for Civilized Society in The Tempest      Ã‚  Ã‚   In The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, the court is portrayed not as a place or as a group of people, but as a structure binding society together. Emphasis is placed on the court as structure by the use of the two metaphors of shape, the sphere and the circle, which combine to give the impression of the court not only as a structure with a clearly defined shape, but also as a system of hierarchical control. The first of these shape metaphors uses the neoplatonic concept of spheres, with the sovereign becoming the One Infinite Being of neoplatonic belief whose divine qualities radiate outwards in concentric circles of diminishing strength into infinity. This introduces important notions not only of the sovereign as a divine being, but also of the court as an organic body and also the formal hierarchies that were inherent in Renaissance Neoplatonism. The second shape mentioned is the circle of protection created by a magician which, although using the language of art rather than nature, and magic rather than divinity, uses once more the discourse of hierarchy, with the magician using the circle as a method of controlling the 'spirit he excites’ (11). This idea of the court as a hierarchical system which is the only way of promoting virtue seems to be linked with the other main feature of the passage: that of the court as an enclosed space.      Ã‚  Ã‚   The language of the passage refers over and over again to boundaries ('banished' (1), 'end' (2), 'concluded' (2), 'bounded' (3), 'comprehend' (4), 'contains' (8), 'excludes' (9), and 'exiled' (14), and the images of sphere and circle also suggest borders which can either contain or exclude.    .. ...terly, 43, no.3, (1992) John Gillies, 'Shakespeare's Virginian Masque' in E.L.H, 53, no.4, (1986) Jeffrey Knapp, An Empire Nowhere: England, America, and Literature from Utopia to The Tempest, (University of California Press, 1992) Anthony Pagden, European Encounters with the New World from Renaissance to Romanticism, (Yale University Press, 1993) Gail Kern Paster, 'Montaigne, Dido and The Tempest: How Came that Widow in?’Shakespeare Quarterly, 35, no.3 (1984) Linda Levy Peck, Court Patronage and Corruption in Early Stuart England, (Unwin Hyman, 1990, reprinted in paperback, Routledge 1993) Bernard W. Group development

This summary is about the group development phases- forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. These five stages will help me work as a group and as a team member. Forming is taking time to get to know each other and picking a team leader. Storming is when each team member has an opinion in what they’ll do in the group project, like choosing what part of the group assignment they’ll have. Norming is sharing ideas as a group; as the group begins to form they start focusing in their own assign work and start working to create the project. Performing is when the team has got to know & trust each other well. They’ll be able to review the project as a team and if they have disagreement they’ll be able to fix them as a group. Adjourning is when the project is coming to an end and the team has work hard for this last stage and know their work was a success; a celebration may happen as the groups work pays off. The differences between a group and a team are that a team is larger than a group. A team takes a strong leader to lead the team. A team needs the best players to win the big win. They’ll need the strongest players, best players, and the commit players. A group can be anybody that’s willing to work together as a group to help with the work. Anybody can be in a group small or tall old or young. A group doesn’t take strong players but commit worker. A group takes a leader to lead the team and the leader will get them to the end. In the beginning group sections weren’t all that bad until high school started. I wasn’t very good with group projects since I was a quite person and didn’t commutate much. My strengths in a group project would be my creativity in art. I’m a good artist, making posters and drawing the pictures in a group project is what I’m good at. My best work would have to do with the crevity of art and design it for the fun of it. My weakness or my challenging roles would be putting the group together as a whole. In a way I prefer working alone so I don’t have to deal with the other students but, I know this will help me keep learning as it progress. I wouldn’t like to put myself in a leader’s role nor a captain’s position since they have to give orders; I get nerves speaking in front of people and I believe this are some of my challenging roles. My weaknesses are being shy with others but since this is online I think it makes it easy for me to express my thoughts. What makes a great group is when everybody has their own part to work on. For example I like drawing so I will like to have the posters and drawing parts. Everybody needs to work together to make this group happen and succeed. The importations in a group project are staying together as a team. Working in groups help people learn more by putting everyone’s ideas together and using them in the group project. Two heads are better than one right? I find it important for workers/students to work in groups because it helps them combine the ideas together and turn them into something more. I feel like the group will help me see and learn the positive sides in group projects. As my learning style results I’m more likely to work hands on but since the group meetings are online I find it a little difficult. I’m good at learning by doing and seeing examples and I will fine this changeling and helpful in the same time. I’m up for the challenge.
